On Sunday 13th April Michael Palin kindly presented the BBC Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of Motivation. We would like to thank everyone who tuned in to the appeal and made a donation to Motivation. Your support will help us to provide disabled people with the opportunity to enjoy healthy and fulfilling lives. "What attracted me to Motivation's work is that not only do they give a useful working life back to many disabled people, but they also work very closely with local communities, enabling them to help build and design their own wheelchairs. By being sensitive and respectful themselves they give respect back to people who might otherwise have been ignored and rejected. This is unqualified good work."

Michael Palin presents the Radio 4 Appeal on behalf of Motivation
More than 20 million people around the world are in need of a wheelchair. Most of them live in developing countries and are unable to go to work or school simply because they're not mobile. The charity Motivation works to change lives by providing wheelchairs, and they do this all over the world.
Lucia Shayo is 10 and lives in a small village on the slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania . She is unable to walk. Lucia's mother had to carry her to and from school every day. She was completely unable to move about independently.
Her life changed dramatically when she received a Motivation wheelchair.

Since 1991 Motivation has helped more than 40,000 disabled people like Lucia in over 30 developing countries. It has done this by providing low-cost well designed wheelchairs that can cope with the local conditions and are locally repairable and replaceable. For example Motivation has designed three-wheeled chairs that are suitable for rough terrain, and four-wheeled chairs more suited to people living in towns and cities. It's also important that the wheelchairs are properly designed and fitted. So the charity trains local staff to fit them to the individual, and trains the user how to be more active and independent.
Having the right wheelchair can transform a disabled person's life, enabling them to go to work or school and to play a full part in their community.
Just £12 buys someone like Lucia a pressure relief cushion for her wheelchair. £20 will buy her the wheels, £120 enables Motivation to supply one person with a complete wheelchair, fit it and train the person how to use it.
