Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I designate my donation to a specific area of Motivation’s work?

Motivation works in various developing countries worldwide. To support this work we have to cover, what we call, our core running costs. These costs cover all aspects of our work including our wheelchair services, capacity building, employment programmes and rights activities. If you make a donation to Motivation we will assume that this is where you want your donation to go.

However, if you would like to ensure that your donation goes directly towards buying a wheelchair for a disabled individual, you can choose to make a donation to the General Wheelchair Fund by marking your donation: GWF. The average cost of a Motivation wheelchair is £120.

I have made a donation to the General Wheelchair Fund, can I find out more about the person who will receive the mobility gift?

If Motivation were to match each donation to the individual who benefitted from it, it would significantly increase our administration costs. This means that less of your donation would go to the people you want to help. Motivation keeps in contact with beneficiaries, where possible, through our local partners. We also tell our supporters how their donations have helped disabled people through case studies in our regular newsletter, Motif.

I bought a pair of wheels for a wheelchair through your Gifts in Lieu campaign. Do you really provide someone with a set of wheels?

Motivation runs a Gifts in Lieu campaign, where we invite our supporters to buy a disabled person parts of, or a whole, wheelchair. Sometimes, we will raise enough money to buy 40 pressure relief cushions, but only 15 pairs of wheels and 10 frames. This would only enable us to make 10 complete wheelchairs – with other parts left over. To make the best use of your donation, the money you gave to buy a cushion may instead be put towards the costs of a frame or wheels – ensuring that someone can truly benefit from your gift.

I’d like to donate a second-hand or hospital-style wheelchair. Can I give it to Motivation?

Each year Motivation receives offers of second hand or hospital-style wheelchairs from individuals or organisations based in developed countries. Although we appreciate the generosity of these offers, the experience of our staff and our partners overseas has shown that many of these donated wheelchairs are ill-suited to the needs of wheelchair users in low-income countries. If you’d like to learn more about donated wheelchairs, Motivation has developed some fact sheets which are available to download:
