Leaving a Legacy

Leave something that lasts

- quality of life

Thank you for your interest in leaving a gift to Motivation in your will. By leaving a legacy to Motivation you will be buying someone a priceless gift: quality of life.

Ways of leaving a gift to Motivation in your will

There are 3 main types of legacy:

Residuary bequests:

Once family and loved ones have been provided for, the remainder or a proportion of a person's estate is pledged to Motivation.

Pecuniary bequests :

A specific sum of money is pledged to Motivation .

An item of value:

Alternatively, some people chose to leave something other than money, such as property or an item of value such as a piece of jewellery.

The advantages of leaving a legacy to Motivation

Charitable legacies are paid before tax is deducted, thus eliminating or reducing the amount of inheritance tax that might be due from your estate.

Because all charitable legacies are exempt of tax, the money that would have gone to the government directly benefits Motivation's work instead.

Leaving a legacy to Motivation will help us continue enhancing the lives of people with mobility disabilities long into the future.

How to make a will

If you already have a will you can still make a bequest to Motivation without making a new one by using a codicil, which is an addition to your will explaining, modifying or revoking (parts of) it.

If you choose to make a bequest to Motivation in your will, please use our full name, address and our registered charity number as follows:

Residuary bequest:

"Subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give the whole/___% of my estate not otherwise disposed of by this, my Will, to Motivation (Registered Charity Number: 1079358) of Brockley Academy, Brockley Lane, Backwell, Bristol, BS48 4AQ, for the general purposes of Motivation and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge."

Pecuniary bequest:

"I give free of tax to Motivation (Registered Charity Number: 1079358) of Brockley Academy, Brockley Lane, Backwell, Bristol, BS48 4AQ, the sum of £_____ for the general purposes of Motivation and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge."

Leaving an item of value:

Please describe fully the item you wish to donate. For example:

"I give the 18th century diamond bracelet with a screw fastening, that I am photographed wearing at ____ to Motivation (Registered Charity Number: 1079358) of Brockley Academy, Brockley Lane, Backwell, Bristol, BS48 4AQ, and I declare that the receipt of their Treasurer or other proper officer shall be a full and sufficient discharge."

Although it is possible to write your own will, there are many laws governing their legality. It is therefore recommended that you seek professional legal advice when you are drawing up or amending your will, to ensure that the final document you produce clearly represents your intentions. If you do not already have a solicitor, you may find the following websites useful to identify a suitable firm close to where you live: www.solicitors-online.com or www.lawyerlocator.co.uk.
