Special seating
| Special Seating for Sri Lanka Motivation returned to Ragama Rehabilitation Hospital in 2000 to help set up a service for children with cerebral palsy. In Sri Lanka few professionals or parents understand the needs or potential of children with cerebral palsy and there is no rehabilitation service for them. The project's aim was to establish a sustainable and replicable special seating service from which other organisations in Sri Lanka can learn. We designed and trained a local team in the production of a special seating unit. The seating is manufactured at the wheelchair workshop established by Motivation in 1997. A range of seating units was designed so that they are suitable for children of different needs and ages and are made from locally available material. A local therapy team was trained to prescribe and fit the special seating and further training was also provided to occupational therapists, physiotherapists and speech therapists to upgrade their skills in the development of functional abilities of children with cerebral palsy. |
