Total Rehab - Disability Healthcare and Mobility Programme

Motivation travelled to Sri Lanka in 1997 to work with Ragama Rehabilitation Hospital to improve the rehabilitation of people with spinal cord injuries.

Of the small number of people who survived their spinal cord injury, the standard and quality of their rehabilitation was so poor that their overall rehabilitation and independence was severely hampered.

A key focus of our work was to train a team of national trainers, consisting of nursing, occupational therapy and physiotherapy staff, in the provision of rehabilitation. This team now provides an educated and knowledgeable resource base from which a national training programme is being developed. Alongside this we improved the quality and provision of rehabilitation equipment including wheelchairs, urinary and pressure management equipment.

A major achievement of the project was the initiation, by wheelchair users at Ragama, of the Spinal Injuries Association of Sri Lanka. The SIA now provides support and services for wheelchair users both during rehabilitation and in the community, and is also responsible for the running of the wheelchair workshop.
