Latin America
Armed conflicts and natural disasters throughout the Latin America region have resulted in a high proportion of people becoming disabled. Motivation worked with Capacitación a Discapacitados de Centro América (CADISCA), our partner organisation in Nicaragua, on a series of small projects to improve the quality of life of wheelchair users in the region.
In January Cadisca completed a project to remove architectural barriers for wheelchair users in Managua. The team built 200 ramps across Managua accessing public areas in just three months with a team of wheelchair user. The removal of physical barriers will give disabled people, and wheelchair users in particular, an equal opportunity to access key financial, educational and social areas within the city. The local government has now committed to continuing this work.

There are few employment opportunities open to men with disabilities and even less are available to disabled women. As a result of limited access to employment, disabled women are trapped in a continuous state of extreme poverty. CADISCA provides vocational training, with our support mothers with disabilities were trained in dressmaking skills.
