Marianne Kent & Lucy Tarallo
Welcome to this edition of Motifundraising. We’re delighted to share with you the excellent fundraising achievements of Motivation supporters over the past six months.

Like all charities, Motivation has felt the effect of the recession. However we are exceedingly grateful for the ongoing commitment shown by Motivation supporters and thank you for your dedication to improving the quality of life of disabled people in low-income countries.

Motivation Winter Ball 2010

Those of you who attended Motivation’s ball in 2008 will know that it was a fantastic event that raised over £20,000 to support our work in developing countries. Due to popular demand for a repeat event, Motivation will be holding a Winter Ball at the Roman Bath and Pump Room complex on Saturday 27th February 2010.

The Winter Ball will include all the fun and thrills of the previous ball, but because it is being held outside of the traditional ball season we’ve managed to secure excellent discounts, which we’re passing onto you. We’ve bought last year’s ticket price down by £10 per person. Plus, if you book and pay before 11th December 2009 you can secure the early bird rate of £65 per person.

Wedding and Celebration Gift List Service
More and more people are choosing to nominate a charity to benefit from the special occasions in their lives; such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. This is particularly true of Motivation supporters, who have often asked family and friends to make a donation to Motivation in lieu of requesting physical gifts. Motivation is therefore delighted to announce our bespoke online Wedding and Celebration Gift List Service.

For further information visit the Wedding or Celebration Gift List pages on our website.

Direct Debits
As well as making credit and debit card donations online, Motivation supporters can now set up direct debit donations via our website. Simply visit www.motivation.org.uk/_donate and select Set up a Direct Debit or click on the Direct Debit image on the right.

Motivation Gift Range

When we ceased production of our Christmas card range last year we promised you an exciting new range of merchandise ahead of the Christmas period. We are therefore delighted to announce the Motivation Gift Range.

The Gift Range includes the brand new Motivation Cookbook, which features some of our favourite recipes from our projects around the world and a foreword by Prue Leith; food writer, restaurateur and judge on the BBC’s Great British Menu. Staying on the food theme, the Gift Range also includes a selection of Motivation festive desserts. Also available is a selection of limited edition prints by Tanzanian artist Filbert Mlay. Fans of Motivation Christmas cards will remember Filbert’s distinctive style. Click here to download a PDF flyer with full details of the Gift Range.

Supporters’ Corner

Motivation would like to thank Ellen Saxby, Philip Lange and Martin Young for taking part in the Silverstone Half Marathon 2009 and raising £600 for Motivation. A further £500 was donated by Royal Bank of Scotland from the Community Cashback Awards. Congratulations to the team!

In May Sue Collis took on the Bristol 10K and raised a fantastic £128, enabling Motivation to supply a wheelchair to a disabled person in a developing country. Also in May, Joyjit Sarkar took part in the Great Midlands Fun Run and raised £105 to support Motivation’s work.

Thank you all for your hard work and commitment.

Walk for Uganda

Motivation would like to thank staff from the Golden Jubilee Regional Spinal Cord Injuries Centre, based at the James Cook University Hospital in Middlesbrough. The staff held a sponsored walk and fundraised to send two of their nurse colleagues to support Motivation’s Internally Displaced Persons Programme in Uganda. Jess Metcalfe and Daniel Whitehead spent three weeks at St Mary’s Hospital, Lacor providing mentoring and training to upgrade knowledge and care delivery amongst staff that support spinally injured patients. Thank you for your dedication to improving the lives of disabled people in Uganda.

Marathon des Sables Challenge

In March Motivation’s Clinical Coordinator Sarah Frost took on the Marathon des Sables; an ultra-marathon held in the extreme conditions of the southern Moroccan desert. Sarah has raised an incredible £15,000 to support Motivation’s work. Sarah would like to thank everyone who has generously supported her challenge and fundraising efforts over the last 18 months.

The Welsh 3000 Challenge

We would like to thank Mark Barrell, Carys Holloway, Amy Holloway, Owen Thornton, Kathy Burdett and Ele Jones for taking on the Welsh 3000s Challenge in July to raise funds for Motivation. In order to complete the Welsh 3000s challenge participants are required to summit all of the mountains over 3000 ft in Wales within the space of 24 hours, without using any form of transport. The team completed the challenge successfully and raised over £500 to support Motivation’s work in developing countries. Well done!

3 Girls, 3 Bikes, 1 Adventure

In 2006, local supporter Anne Richards became the first person ever to run the London Marathon for Motivation. Three years later, Anne’s daughter is making Motivation history as part of our first all-girl team to cycle from Land’s End to John O’Groats! Suzie Richards, Jo Maddick and Cat Foley are all committed athletes who believe in the universal right to personal mobility. They have already raised over £1,500 to support disabled people in developing countries. To sponsor the girls, visit
