Motivated to Travel

The annual Ian Gardener Memorial Lecture will be held at the Royal Geographical Society in London on Tuesday 3rd March. This year’s guest speaker will be Abercrombie & Kent’s UK Managing Director, Justin Wateridge. Justin has spent the last 15 years working in travel, whether leading tours and expeditions - including travelling the length of the Mekong by bicycle with Ian Gardener – or travelling to some of the more remote parts of the world in search of ‘travel beyond the ordinary’ for the UK’s leading tour operators. Tickets for this event are available from the UK office, priced £12.50 each. Call 01275 464012 or download a booking form here

The Roman Bath at Night

In October 2008 Motivation held its first ever fundraising ball at the glorious Pump Room in Bath. We would like to thank everyone who attended or supported the ball. With your help we raised over £20,000 to continue our work supporting disabled people in developing countries. Due to popular demand we will be holding another ball at the Pump Room in February 2010. If you would like to be kept informed about this exciting event visit our website or contact Lucy on 01275 464012 or events@motivation.org.uk

Christmas update

This Christmas, Motivation supporters raised over £12,240 in response to our Christmas appeal. This money will enable Motivation to provide 102 appropriate wheelchairs for disabled people in developing countries. Thank you.

Motivation supporters also spotted a bargain with our discounted Christmas cards! We would like to say a special thanks to Jean Constantine and Linda Alvis who both arranged events in their local communities to fundraise for Motivation. Our thanks also go to Cheryl Piper, Rita Langler and Mick & Jane Howey for their enthusiastic support.

We have now sold out of all Christmas cards, and will not be printing new cards in the future. However, this year we will be launching a range of environmentally friendly e-cards. Other Christmas merchandise will include posters by Tanzanian artist Filbert Mlay, calendars and a special Motivation recipe book! Further details will be provided in our next newsletter and on our website.

Make a difference through inclusive adventure

Are you looking for a new challenge in 2009? Would you like to raise money for Motivation, have some fun and get fit at the same time? Well now is your chance, thanks to a partnership between Equal Adventure and Motivation. Supported by Glenmore Lodge, the inaugural Annual Equal Adventure Festival will take place at Glenmore Lodge and Cairngorms National Park on 4-5th July 2009. The inclusive team event will provide a range of outdoor activities that create a challenge for each individual, regardless of their impairment. Teams will participate in a range of activities including: problem solving, high ropes challenge, and water & land based activities.

Also in September, Alison Fletcher took part in the Great Yorkshire Run and raised a fantastic £220, whilst Debbie Sims took part in her first half marathon in the New Forest and raised £380. Sarah Frost training for the Marathon des Sables

Sarah Frost is Motivation’s Clinical Coordinator. In March Sarah will be running the Marathon des Sables (MdS) to raise funds for Motivation. The MdS is a 254km, six day race, held in the extreme conditions of the southern Moroccan desert. The link with mobility, tough conditions and environment make this challenge highly appropriate for Motivation. If you would like to support Sarah please visit:
