Course overview

The aim of this two-day workshop is to provide an overview of the challenges and solutions for wheelchair provision in disaster relief situations, and how to set up and run appropriate services in a disaster relief situation. Day 1 is the Wheelchair Services in Low Income Countries course.

Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:
  • Define what makes an appropriate wheelchair
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of a range of different types of manual wheelchair used in emergency response situations
  • Describe the features of and adjustments to a range of different types of manual wheelchair
  • Explain different cushion types and why they are important
  • List the 8 steps of a wheelchair service and explain considerations in emergency response situations
  • Explain strategies for transition from emergency to long-term service provision
  • Outline how to provide awareness raising for government level decision makers for appropriate wheelchair provision as per WHO guidelines
  • Demonstrate essential fitting techniques for basic level service provision
  • Demonstrate essential wheelchair maintenance required for users
  • Explain common techniques to modify a manual wheelchair to meet the basic needs of a wheelchair user
  • Explain the essential considerations for toileting
  • Demonstrate basic mobility skills including assisting users up/down steps, slopes and over rough ground
  • List key prescription safety tips for common user groups in disaster situations
