Course overview

The aim of the workshop is to provide an overview of wheelchair provision in less resourced settings, covering the three main areas of products, services and training: to enable participants to establish or enhance basic level wheelchair services (as defined by WHO ‘Guidelines on the provision of Manual Wheelchairs in less resourced settings’). Learning outcomes

Participants will be able to:
  • Use an assessment tool to evaluate an appropriate wheelchair
  • List the advantages and disadvantages of a range of wheelchair products available in less resourced settings
  • Explain five simple modifications to improve basic wheelchairs and cushions
  • Describe the Motivation recommended service process and explain four key fitting techniques
  • Describe two key health issues and management for a broad range of wheelchair users
  • Describe three key access issues and management for a broad range of wheelchair users
