This summer, we were so proud to team up with Norlha Textiles and the Challenged Athletes Foundation to witness some truly magical wheelchair basketball in Tibet.

On the Tibetan Plateau, 3,000 metres above sea level, there is a remote village that plays home to nomads and monks. On any given day, they can be seen herding their sheep and reciting their mantras.

And playing their favourite sport - basketball.

Once a year, Norlha textiles - a local company dedicated to preserving ancient Tibetan culture - hosts two basketball tournaments and this year, they introduced a wheelchair division for the first time. What’s more, Alana Nichols – one of the best wheelchair basketball players in the world - joined the event to show the local community how it’s done.

We were so excited when we were asked to ship six of our Multisport wheelchairs out to the tournament but, logistically, it was a real challenge. We were prepared for the fact that our wheelchairs would not be able to reach such a remote location in time.

But our incredible logistics team managed to get them to the nearest town on the second day of the tournament, and the locals immediately rushed forward to unpack and assemble them.

Wheelchair basketball was an overwhelming success in the community. Children and adults alike were zooming around the court, and attending classes run by Alana Nichols.  And Lahmo, the only wheelchair user in the community, said,

Well, at least now I’m not the only one in a wheelchair.

At Motivation, we realise that few things in life have as much to offer as sport. Yet the high cost of sports wheelchairs stops many disabled people from taking part. So when the International Paralympic Committee asked us to design a low cost, high quality, sports wheelchair, we jumped at the chance! And we have been selling our sports chairs all over the world ever since.

In 2016, over 3,200 people accessed grassroots sports using a Motivation chair. Our chairs reached the far corners of the globe, enabling people to enjoy the benefits that sports can bring, even in the world’s most challenging environments like Syria and North Korea.
