Our impact

"I feel more confident and have more self-esteem. I used to just get left on my own but now I can be independent and even help my family..."

Impact can be immediate but it should always last a lifetime

Michael Jnr is just one example of the life-changing impact of our work. With his Motivation wheelchair he has greater mobility and through our mentoring programme he has new confidence. Not only does he feel more independent, but he can contribute to his family and even attend school.

Our work empowers disabled people, their families and their communities.

Through advocacy and our global networks, we aim to change the way wheelchairs are provided around the world.

And others agree that our practical approach really does work. Since 2013, we have been awarded the Bond International Development Award, the Guardian’s International Development Achievement Award and the London Design Medal for our work supporting disabled people.

In 2020, our usual work was disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. We rapidly adjusted our activities to meet local needs as the crisis evolved.

While face-to-face work was suspended, we supported wheelchair users and their families remotely through emergency responses, virtual training and advocacy.

In India, our team worked with local partners to safely provide food and healthcare kits. They ensured 1,439 people received dry ration kits and 435 people received health supplies, including sanitiser, face masks and continence products. This work was re-started to respond to the India COVID-19 crisis in 2021.

In Kenya and Malawi, we set up social cash transfer programmes that enabled people to buy necessary supplies. We used careful selection criteria to direct these donations to the most vulnerable and reached 250 people in 2020.

We made support calls to 4,623 disabled people across all our programme countries, which included guidance on wheelchair maintenance and repair. We also created disability-specific resources, such as a guide on sanitising wheelchairs..

As the pandemic persisted, we stayed in touch with partners, participants and funders remotely, so they could keep up to date with our work and continue to learn from our experts. In India, we provided virtual training on posture care to rehabilitation professionals in ten clinics across South Asia.

We ended the year with stronger stakeholder relationships, which benefitted from shared empathy, a reminder of shared values, easier and more equal international communication.
